Center Stage

Got Any More Talent There, Mr. Zhang Jie-Song?!

The man of the hour this week on Center Stage is Zhang Jie-Song! So who is this guy? A Philosopher? Artist? Poet? Musician? An Art Curator?!! Well, with the coming of an exhibition series presented by the Salomon Arts Gallery in New York titled Red Blood of the Dragons Psyche, he is now all of the above. And to understand him better, you must first understand his projects better. His latest event, the exhibition , doesn’t go without a clear ambition just as strong; to assert the belief that if one wishes to know and value Chinese art with sincerity, then one must learn to know and value China, Chinese people, Chinese thought. The work of 10 Chinese contemporary artists will be presented throughout this exhibit and towards the end, the works of the artists will be presented alongside information on China in the form of news-stories, essays, and video projection intended to provide a constellation of social and historical points. Works include photography, oil paintings, mixed-media works that involve ink, newspaper, traditional Chinese art on paper, propylene and woodcut works. The exhibit will begin admittance starting June 6th. To see other dates and more information, visit www.myspace.com/jiesong or www.salomonarts.com.

Jie-Song would be best described as an all around art lover and his passion extends to his musical talents as well. He is a founding member of a group named Stone Forest Ensemble that takes a bit of hip hop, classical, and afro beats to make their sound just as unique as the band itself. The group consists of an electric violinist, a vocalist, flutist, a cellist, two drummers, a beatboxer and a strummer of the pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument that best describes a teardrop shaped guitar. Can’t believe this is just one group? Check for yourself at www.myspace.com/sfenyc. Now mark the date and start listening to what this talented group has to say because it just wouldn’t make sense to let them slip by!

Gossip, News & Randoms:
What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

Gossip, News & Randoms: What’s going on with Asian and Asian American artists?

Illmind – Meet the phenom behind probably all the latest hip hop hits. Sure it’s the rappers that celebrate most of the glory but without the works of producers like Illmind, where would artist like 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks be? So you guessed it. Illmind is currently under G-Unit's Sha-Money XL's Money Management production company and is the appointed in-house producer for members of the G-Unit clan. But what makes this story a backdrop theme for “be yourself and people will appreciate you the way you are” is the fact that He is a Filipino American from Bloomfield, New Jersey.

And it’s not just us saying this. Illmind’s resume is extensive enough as it is impressive enough to speak volumes on its own with tracks like Let's Go from Boot Camp Clik's album The Last Stand and Cardiac from Sean Price's album Jesus Price Superstar. Aside from making rappers wealthier than they deserve, Illmind also spends time teaching high school kids the art of music production and business part time at the Harlem Children’s Zone. Visit his MySpace page at www.myspace.com/illmind or his official website at www.illmind.biz to see what he’s up to now. You might get lucky enough to sample the fruits of his labor before it becomes the next mega hit track!

Marie Digby – With her stunning good looks and Hollywood-esque bone structure, it’s clearly obvious why she already has such a huge following. Being both half Japanese and half Irish doesn’t hurt either since it seems like she appeals to both groups just the same. Lately having tasted the sweet success of being a YouTube sensation with more than 2 million hits on some of her music video clips, she seems to be on top of her game these days. Talented, she is. And though the hard work she’s done through sweat and tears has hit stores in the form of an album titled Unfold on April 8th, it seems what still remains as her greatest asset is her warm, genuine, and personable attitude towards her fans.

You can tell she counts her blessings and appreciates her fans so much. I mean, who else writes a letter of thanks to their fans on their webpage in the middle of a tour that’s supposed to hit many, many cities in very, very little time? And it’s this reason why so many already love her. No matter what the success of her album sales or hits on YouTube, she’s just one of those girls that don’t let “diva” get to their head. Wanna see? Just type her name, Marie Digby, on the YouTube search and you’ll be flooded with videos that showcase her free spirit and talent or you can always check her out at www.myspace.com/mariedigby. Yes, it’s okay to fall in love all over again.

Re-up

This past Memorial Day weekend, we hoped that all that are in the Chicago, Illinois area was in the house to catch the infamous DJ QBert doing his thing on the ones and twos. Also, Miss Shin B was on tour in New York City and the last leg of her string of concerts landed her in the Chinatown staple, Five Points Mission.
