Center Stage

Return of The Asian Massive

In 2003, producers Cheb i Sabbah, Karsh Kale and New Delhi based electronica group The Midival Punditz pioneered a sound synonymous with the sublime blurring of boundaries between classical & devotional Indian music, electronica and rock. They coined the name Asian Massive to describe this genre. Five years and many albums later, this all-star lineup returns with fierce DJ sets that will include new material from all three artists.

There will be three rooms of music & dance. The Massive Room will feature Cheb i Sabbah, Karsh Kale and The Midival Punditz. The Worldly Room will feature music from Janaka Selekta, Zakhm, RadioHiro, DJ Warp and in The Faux Dive Hookah Lounge will host Micropixie, DJ Amar and Luxury Tax. The event is hosted by All Is One and sponsored by Six Degrees Records and Narika. For more information, please visit www.myspace.com/janakaselekta.

What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

Gossip, News & Randoms: What’s going on with Asian and Asian American artists?

Salt Lake City Asian Hip Hop Summit – Last year we saw the birth of Asian Hip Hop Summit in New York City which featured performances from Flow Sik, Misnomers, L.S., Kelly Tsai and more. The event was hosted by Miss Info of New York City’s Hot97 and sponsored by ImaginAsian Radio.

This year Asiatic Empire has set up a slew of dates running everyday in the month of August and playing venues that start in Salt Lake City to New York City and back to California. The first stop will be in Salt Lake City and will feature performances from Dumbfoundead, Lyraflip, J Natural, DJ Dstrukt, Sick Sense & Skinwalker, Broken Silence, Smash Brothers and many more. Of course, they always have a Open Mic/MC Battle with every concert, so all you aspiring emcees can get your chance at stardom. For more information, please visit www.asiaticempire.org.

Rock Inside the Second Box - This August, Soulworks Records, the New Jersey-based independent Filipino-American record company will release the highly anticipated second volume of the historic rock compilation series, Rock in the Box. This latest volume features the songs of 16 of the best Filipino-American and Filipino-Canadian bands in the scene today. Here is the official lineup of artists, the state they represent and their song entries.

This is the first compilation that will include bands from all over North America. The first volume of Rock in the Box, released also in August of 2006, only featured bands mostly from the East Coast: The Speaks, Bleud, The Kuwagos, Rubberband, The Happy Analogues, Bagwis, Blue Mellon Pop, The Moonbugs, Grim Bottle, Sodapop Suicide, Alfa, Grim Bottle Titofelix, and The Third Element. Now after a record number of entries from last year’s open submission, the compilation series has truly gone continental. For more information, please visit www.soulworksrecords.com.
