Mia Kim Explains the Sukey Rose Project

When Mia first started out as an indie artist, no one ever told her that one of the most essential things for an artist is a strong support system. But being the considerate girl that she is, Mia never wanted to bother anyone for help thinking she’d rather do everything herself. By everything, we mean promoting gigs, bookings, marketing, etc… while making her own music and writing her own songs. And if you haven’t guessed already, it wasn’t long before she completely burnt herself out. But her story doesn’t end with singed flames. Rather, it’s one of victory and growth. Through it all, Mia realized that in order to get to the “next level”, there is no way she’d be able to do it on her own. So she is inviting everyone to participate in helping a girl realize her dreams and to be a part of the principle she has grown fondly of: I am independent but not alone. And that’s exactly what the Sukey Rose Project aims to do.

At first glance, it would seem like the only objective for this project is to raise funds for Mia’s next upcoming album. But look a little deeper and you’ll see that the projects ambitions are much higher and profound than that. Participants get to help the artist choose song titles, ideas for her songs and share opinions about the project with each other. In whole, it aims to integrate the lives of the participants and her own by collaborating with anyone who wants to be a part of it, which in turn, solidifies her belief – independence doesn’t equal aloneness. It’s aim is clearly to inspire, to be grateful, and to let others in even while erecting one’s own identity. And for many, just knowing such an idea can materialize this way is inspiration already. So be on the look out for Mia’s next album titled Who is Sukey Rose and find out how you can contribute at www.sukeyrose.com or www.myspace.com/miakim. It might be your story she’s singing about next!

What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

Gossip, News & Randoms: What’s going on with Asian and Asian American artists?

Notorious MSG – Like something out of an Asian drama, this group does have an interesting and tear jerking story to tell. Blasting out of the streets of Chinatown, THE NOTORIOUS MSG has arrived with a vengeance. Serving up deep-fried beats straight from the Chinese ghetto, they will not stop until they achieve complete world domination. This is the story of three renegade restaurant workers from the hardened streets of Chinatown, New York City. Pursuing their dreams of rap superstardom, Hong Kong Fever, Down-Lo Mein and The Hunan Bomb fled the harsh ghettos of Asia only to face more hardships as second-class citizens in America. They struggled to earn a living, toiling in the kitchens and risking their lives as Chinese restaurant delivery boys. Facing robberies and beatings on a daily basis, their fight for survival came to a head when an unknown assailant killed one of their original band members, Funky Buddha. This was the last straw; it was time to fight back. Facing discrimination as Chinese delivery boys, The Notorious MSG are prepared for the same battle with corporate America. Today, The MSG rises again to challenge yet another foe, the music industry. Seeing how Asians have yet to be accepted as a force in the American music scene, they will continue to unleash their blistering musical buffet and flaunt their unique Asian American flavor with no apologies.

My favorite has to be Dim Sum Girl. Notorious MSG has, no doubt, a lot of fury to unleash and it can catch people off guard at how sweet and wholesome this track sounds. It not only seeps into your heart with a totally catchy tune and sweet vocals but it also has the lyrics and sentiment of a young, admire-from-afar type of theme to revive memories of your innocent years. For me, it has quickly become a song I want to listen to over and over again because the lyrics are just too funny and the song way too catchy. And that must have been the case for many of their fans since it was downloaded 7,500 times within the first 48 hours of its introduction. Talk about an entrance! They’ve been keeping busy since then. With features in Bust Magazine, Hyphen Magazine, the Washington Post Express (just to name a few) and with interviews from all over the media, it seems like their plans for world domination is still in effect. With talent and a story like theirs, it would only seem right to fall under submission. Not unwillingly, but out of respect and admiration for a group that has been remaining true to themselves since the beginning. Check out www.myspace.com/notoriousmsg.com or www.notoriousmsg.com to see what’s on their menu!

Pete Mister – Half-Chinese and half-White, Pete identified with the counter culture qualities of hip-hop in the late eighties. Bicoastal and biracial this Portland, Oregon native has established a reputation for clever, intelligent songwriting, and speaker-cracking production in New York City’s underground hip-hop community. After six years with a group named 5 Fingers of Funk which he created in 1992, Pete moved to New York City to explore hip-hop in its birthplace. It was then in 1999 that artist Dido recruited him as the DJ in their live band which, in turn, helped him birth his first solo album, Radio Free Brooklyn. Not too long ago, he also collaborated with Benson Lee’s documentary Planet B-boy where he spent most of the early winter making songs for the documentary. As his resume expanded, so did his popularity with his fans.

Which brings us to – Camouflage is Relative, his latest full length album that reminds us why we used to love hip hop. On this album, Pete’s imagination goes into overdrive with songs ranging from the hilariously philosophical Scent Of A Robot about a cubicle-dwelling everyman who discovers he’s actually a programmed robot, to the explosive emo-anthem So Sensitive that details his failings as a stereotypical hip-hop Casanova. Fourteen songs deep, Camouflage Is Relative is a guided tour through New York’s urban underground marked by off-kilter sample driven beats and rugged turntablism. And if you’re looking to smirk a little at the absurdity of some things, join Pete in exploring the comical aspect of “adding” some one onto their MySpace page. So it WASN’T just you who thought this “thanks for the add” deal was a puzzling phenomena no one really understood! Here’s the info; log on to see what he’s cooking up next! www.petemiser.com & www.myspace.com/petemiser.
