Center Stage

Sub Swara moving on up!!

They were part of the ImaginAsian Radio family, but they have moved on to bigger and better things and we are the first ones to congratulate them. One of New York City’s hottest electronic crews, with members Dhruva (DJ/tabla-ist, producer), Sunder (DJ, turntablist) Haj (DJ/Producer), Juakali (Vocalist) Pictureman (Visual DJ), and DJ Nasha (DJ, Producer) combine to bring you the illest live sets combining DJ-ing with live tabla, turntablism, Ragga vocals and visual tweakery.

They are residents at Element in New York City with their banging monthly shows and now they have descended upon the world. With a slew of international events coming up, they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. Please check out Dhruva at the end of the month on BBC Radio’s Maryanne Hobbes Show and their next monthly show where they will be taking on Dub War and Kush Arora. Late in the summer, you can catch them at the Shambhala Music Festival in British Columbia, Canada. For more information on the shows and the crew, please visit their website at www.subswara.com.

Gossip, News & Randoms:
What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

CAPA’s Post Festival Concert – The people who bring you the Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival every year in Union Square in New York City are holding another event this month in celebration of APA Heritage month. ImaginAsian Radio was at their festival a couple of weekends ago and it was a blast. It featured performances from Misnomers, Cynthia Lin, Vudoo Soul and more.

This time around, they are holding a concert event in New York City and they are featuring more Asian American musicians. The concert will feature performances by Snacky Chan, Misnomers, Heather Park, Alfa Garcia and Johnny Hi-Fi and will be hosted by Angela Tsai from NBA TV (details listed below in the Events Section). For more information on the event and CAPA, please visit www.capaonline.org.

Kevin So – He is one of the hardest working men in show business, in our opinion, and his tour is down to a few shows. If you have not seen Kevin So live yet, trust us, it is something that you have to see in person. He is on the road promoting for his latest effort, A Brighter Day, and will be playing songs off his new album. For a list of shows or to buy the new album, simply log on to www.kevinso.com.

Aya Higuma - The beautiful reggae star from Yokosuka, Japan, Aya Higuma known simply as Aya is totally reggae-sized. Until she was exposed to reggae, Aya wanted to put her musical talent to performing hip-hop and R&B. And so it goes, that a beautiful young Japanese woman from the city of Yokosuka traveled to America to pursue her dream of becoming a hip-hop and R&B singer.

Now, she has been featured on ImaginAsian Radio with the hit single Geisha Gal and has been a favorite on The Hip Hop Hour with NUZ ‘n’ NAK and the Top 40 shows. She has put together an interesting line up for a concert in New York City’s Central Park for Memorial Day Weekend (details listed below in the Events Section). The show will feature Asian American talent such as Aya Higuma, Flow Sik, DJ Seoul and DJ Chosun along side mainstream artists, CL Smooth and Black Sheep. For more information on Aya and the Memorial Day concert event, please log on to www.ayahentertainment.net.

This week, we had The Happy Analogues in the ImaginAsian Radio studio for an interview. They were here promoting their debut CD, Lilacs and Politics. Stayed tuned to hear the interview. This upcoming week, we will have Amazin LeThi, the fitness guru 9and iaLink health/fitness columnist) in our studio all the way from London to talk about her new book. Also, NUZ from the Hip Hop Hour will be attending the CAPA’s Post Festival Concert event this Friday. If you are in New York City, please stop by the event and say what’s up to NUZ.
