Center Stage

PaperDoll at Crash Mansion

PaperDoll delivers pop at its best, blending shrewd instrumentation with solid hooks and refreshingly honest vocals. Formed in 2004 in New York’s Lower East Side, the group recently recorded a 10-song album with producer Nick Hard (The Bravery, Aberdeen City, The Perfects) and executive producer Bryce Wilson (Brandy, Beyonce, Big Boi, Hilary Duff, Whitney Houston, Groove Theory).

In last week’s issue of ImaginAsian Radio Newsletter, we reported that the PaperDoll show this Thursday, February 28th, 2008, had sold out. For all those who are disappointed that they missed out on their chance to see this great band crank out some old and new material at B.B. Kings, don’t fret. The band has announced another show due to overwhelming demand, and the best part is that the price of admission includes free drinks. For more information, please see the Events section below or log on to www.paperdollband.com.

What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

Gossip, News & Randoms: What’s going on with Asian and Asian American artists?

MUD - In 2001, MUD launched itself upon the San Francisco indie music scene. The band's raw guitar riffs, heavy bass grooves, and intricate songwriting skills produce a unique collection of melodic, hard-edged, and energetic sounds. The result is a blend of punk's energy and incredibly catchy, concise and singable hooks, drawing comparisons to successful crossover bands like Jawbreaker, Green Day, Blondie, NOFX, and Letters to Cleo. MUD recently signed to San Francisco indie label Talking House Records.

MUD will be playing at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, California next week with The Downfalls and The Paper Sons. This is MUD's first time playing at the Rickshaw Stop, and the show will also be the CD release party for The Downfalls. Don't miss your chance to catch MUD in action before they head off to Austin, Texas for SXSW. For more information, please see the Events section below or simply visit www.mudsf.com.

The Five Points Mission – This weekly open mic has been around for what seems like forever. Formerly named Teabag, Five Points Mission changed their name to commemorate the area where the Silk Road Café is located. Their stage has been graced by a who’s who of Asian American musicians; Flow Sik, Maggie Kim, Kevin So, Johnny Hi-Fi, and Heather Park, just to name a few.

This week, they are celebrating the Leap Year with pre-booked performances from Hogwild, Danny Katz, Alice Matiz, Rich Kameda, Hilary Schwartz, Nikki Chawla and a special spotlight performance from Soul/R&B/Hip-Hop artist M. Josephine. For more information, please see the Events section below or log on to www.nycfivepoints.com.

Pete Miser - Originally from Portland, Oregon, Pete Miser has been b-boying, bombing, backspinning and battling since hip hop first took seed in the Northwest. He has traveled the world with his music both as a solo artist and as the DJ for Arista recording artist Dido, appearing on Late Night with David Letterman and the MTV Video Music Awards. He currently makes his home in Brooklyn, NY, where he is equally busy on the mic, in the studio, and on the turntables.

Pete recently released a song, "Open Letter 2 Obama," which features Jin da Emcee and shows his support of the presidential hopeful. Most recently, Bacardi has tapped this talented young man to use one of the songs off his upcoming album for a commercial. You can check out the song dedicated to Obama and check out the spot under his Blog at www.myspace.com/petermiser.
