A Sneak Peek at Hank Kim’s New Album

Since arriving in New York from Ohio over a decade ago, Kim has been a devoted practitioner of song noir. His narrative, cinematic approach to songwriting evokes images and characters that are as enigmatic and shadowy as they are vivid and sympathetic. His first album, Blue Alibi, was created as a heartfelt homage to the often misplaced musical forms of storytelling and song craft. It's power pop that's both immediate and ethereal.

Hank Kim has informed ImaginAsian Radio that his second full length album, Notorious Rainproof Smile, is dropping this summer. However, Mr. Kim has decided that he should bless his audience with some new material this week in New York City. If you are in the area, please go and support Asian American talent. For more information, please see the Events section below or simply log on to www.hankkim.com.

Gossip, News & Randoms: What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

Misnomers – This group has steadily built a diverse and devoted fanbase that crosses race, class, and age groups, having won over numerous audiences that range from the curious to the hostile to the indifferent. Since their group formation two years ago, Knewdles and SOS have performed over forty live shows from Philly to NYC, made national television and radio appearances, and recorded their debut album. The sisters commit themselves to building their unique sound and vision, and sharing their hip hop and themselves with those who want to hear good music.

This past Sunday, January 13th, 2008, on Public Broadcasting Station (PBS), The Misnomers sisters were interviewed by ImaginAsian Radio’s very own Peter NUZ on Asian America. They performed two songs and talked about everything from their influences and what it's like to be Korean American females breaking into the music business. For more information, please log on to www.myspace.com/hiphopmisnomers.

Nivla – A huge thanks goes out to all those who took the time to vote for Nivla ft. P. Oberoi’s song "Be Easy" for the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest. They have made it to the Top 3 with your help. Now they have sealed the deal for a fully budgeted video for "Be Easy" directed by R. Malcolm Jones.

With Nivla's advance to the Top 3, we are one step closer to watching a South Asian hip-hop group represent their culture in front of a billion people worldwide at the Super Bowl - not to mention a major record deal with Interscope Records, which boasts a roster that includes 50 Cent, Eminem, Dr. Dre, etc… For more information, please log on to www.soultaprecords.com/hiphopsuperbowl/Home.html and to vote, www.myspace.com/doritoscrashthesuperbowl.

DJ Shy – The multi-talented DJ Shy has rocked crowds from coast to coast, not to mention some of the most exclusive parties and celebrities, from Snoop Doggy Dog to Nike parties. She is also a DJ at one of Los Angeles’ top radio stations, KIIS, 102.7 FM, and has appeared in countless magazines, newspapers and TV segments and movies.

Now her fans can get a taste of her on a whole new scale. She has released a pilot of a new show, Beauty and the Beats. As she describes it, “Beauty and the Beats is a half-hour reality series/documentary in the vein of a female empowered version of HBO's hit Entourage. We go behind the scenes of DJ SHY's life as KIIS FM's famous female DJ. She has pretty much seen and experienced it all, from surviving shootouts at Compton parties, stalkers in the middle of the night, sleazy club owners and many drunk advances. Every night is different, intensely powered by the nightlife, celebrities, and the crazy antics of her clique. It is quite clear the allure of following DJ Shy radiates magically throughout. It's in the music, the camaraderie, and of course, the beauty and the beats.” This show is guaranteed to be a hit. For more information, please log on to www.dj-shy.com.
