Gossip, News & Randoms:
What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists

What's Going on with Asian and Asian American Artists?

Manjit – An incredibly talented songwriter and producer, her influences include Stevie Wonder, Sade, Des’ree, India Arie, and Anita Baker. As a result, her assured sound fuses unique songwriting with urban and Indian influences. Her writing celebrates her sexuality and heritage, while radiating optimism.

Having collaborated with the likes of Jay-Z, Sade, and Yoko Ono, she continues to work with renowned artists and producers. She also performs regularly in New York City and London. That said, she will be tearing it up this week at New York City staple, Rockwood Music Hall, on Wednesday. Please see the Events section below or simply visit www.manjitmusic.com.

Johnny Hi-Fi - Against their true desires, Asif and Eric were each pushed by their parents to pursue a well-respected and financially secure profession. They experienced many stereotypical difficulties faced by young adults in Asian American households. Through perseverance, they achieved professional success. In fact, they both recognize that their jobs aid in their musical quest.

Now, they are bringing their experience of growing up Asian in America to students at universities across the U.S., with a sense of responsibility, direction, and resolve. Thus, the workshop, Passion and Profession, was born. Asif and Eric answered questions on how to balance a life of passion and profession. They aso offered advice on how to cope with being raised in a multicultural society. For more information, please visit www.passionandprofession.com.

Ishle Park - Ishle's first book, The Temperature of This Water, is the winner of tbree awards: the Pen America Award for Outstanding Writers of Color, the Asian American Literary Awards' Members' Choice Award, and Honorable Mention for Poetry for the Association of Asian American Studies. It was also the best-selling book of the Asian American Writers' Workshop for 2004-2005.

We were perusing through the latest issue of Nylon Magazine and stumbled upon an article featuring Ishle Park. If you are by a newsstand, please go and pick up an issue. She is also featured in a clothing ad in the same magazine. For more information, please visit www.ishle.com.
