Asian American Music Showcase’s Summer SeriesThe summer installments of 2007 make a glorious return to multi-genre showcases. Like the inaugural AAMS, a music series produced by Monkey King Records in 2006, this series will once again present great diversity in musical styles. It will reflect Asian and American musical influences, as well as Asian American perspectives that are distinctive to the San Francisco Bay Area. There are two upcoming showcases. AAMS #9 will take place on August 22, 2007 and will feature MUD, Say Bok Gwai, Isul Kim Band and Sky and Telescope. AAMS #10 takes place about a month later on September 19, 2007. The lineup includes Radio Pornography, Lumaya, Say Bok Gwai and All Ages. For more information on AAMS, please visit www.monkeykingrecords.com/aams. Gossip, News & Randoms: What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists
Gossip, News & Randoms: What’s going on with Asian and Asian American artists?Basement Bhangra - Nominated best DJ by New York magazine, selected by The New York Times Magazine as "one of the ten women of downtown music" and named one of the most influential South Asians in the United States by Newsweek magazine, DJ Rekha has put Bhangra music on the North American map. Not just an authority and scene creator for South Asian dance music, Rekha is recognized as a selector with an extraordinary musical range. When not playing alongside Outkast, The Roots, LeTigre, Devo, and Rah Digga she is hosting her legendary Basement Bhangra and Bollywood Disco Nights. The Basement Bhangra phenomenon takes place on the third Thursday of every month at the world famous S.O.B.’s in New York City. This week, the party jumps with the help of DJ Rekha, DJ MS, and visuals by FICTIVE, with free mojitos and dance lessons. For more information, please see the events section below or simply visit www.basementbhangra.com. Asian Hip Hop Summit Vancouver - On Thursday, August 23rd, 2007, the first annual Asian Hip Hop Summit Vancouver will take place in Canada. A festival celebrating outstanding Asiatic rap talent, the Asian Hip Hop Summit first originated in Koreatown, Los Angeles in 2002, on the tenth anniversary of the LA Riots. Since then, the Asian Hip Hop Summit has launched the performing careers of countless Asiatic musicians and artists. It has also spawned a politicized, teen-based hip hop subculture and music scene in Koreatown, LA. Representing everywhere from the birth place of hip hop, New York City, to our northern neighbor, AHHS, brings the heat. This round will feature Lyra Flip, RCV, XYL, E.V., Narai, No Luck Club, Rapper Willy, Hep D MC, Van City’s Finest, On Point Collective, Janman, Mista Ri, DJ Changsta and DJ Triks. For more information, please see the events section below or log on to www.asiaticempire.org. Faith Rivera - Faith is a Kauai-born singer, songwriter, artist, and producer. What's more, she's a 2003 Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Original Song, featured on NBC's "Passions." Her uplifting music can be heard on film and television, with her five artist releases, and as a session singer working with artists like Sheila E. and Luther Vandross. She was featured on Neil Young's Grammy-nominated “Living with War” album, and most recently, on World Peace One's theme song, "Give Your Love", with a collection of singers that includes Al Jarreau, Brian Mcknight, Christina Applegate . She is looking to replace two pictures in her new Peace Today video. They're towards the end of the song: one with a man in front of tanks and the other with a dove on the turret of a ship. If there's a picture you've taken, which you think would be the "perfect" shot for those lyrics, please email a jpeg file or a link to her at aloha@faithrivera.com. She would love to use your artistic energy to add to this beautiful video. Just In
