Five Points Mission in New York CityWhat was known as TeaBag has changed its name and the venue. What was once a small variety show has turned into something that no one could have predicted if you used to attend the open mics in a basement on Mott Street in New York City’s Chinatown. Now it is called Five Points Mission and it is bigger, better and badder. The new Five Points Mission has many faces: The Variety Hour is one of the liveliest shows in Manhattan! Each show features an eclectic mix of music, hip hop, poetry, comedy, trash talk, and spontaneous insanity. The Poets Lounge showcases the city's best and emerging poets, spoken word artists, folk musicians and performance artists. Film Workshop is a short film screening featuring works from the rich pool of emerging local filmmakers and offers a chance for the filmmakers to talk to the audience about their film. Also, check out the Podcast, where the crew from Five Points Mission talk about Asian American issues that affect us today. Drop by for some spontaneous action if you are in NYC and for more information, log on to www.nycfivepoints.com Gossip, News & Randoms: What's going on with Asian and Asian American Artists
Dengue Fever – The band was recently in The New York Times, their song Sni Bong is the featured title song for ImaginAsian TV’s original program, Comedy Zen, they were featured in Time Out New York and now they are showcased in one of highest profile music festivals in North America. You can check out Dengue Fever along with many of the Asian American bands we feature here on ImaginAsian Radio such as MUD and Asobi Seksu from March 9th through the 18th. For more information on Dengue Fever, please log on to www.denguefevermusic.com Dana Leong - For those of you with any affinity for Japanese magazines, the Winter issue of Cool-NY magazine features a peek into the international art scenes of NY, Berlin, Shanghai, Tokyo, London, Toronto, Los Angeles and other major cities. Page 66 of the Winter Issue Volume 12 features a 6 Page bilingual interview with Dana covering inspiration, the music industry and the early years. Cool-NY Magazine is available in select locations and by mail order via subscription on their website, www.cool-ny.com Also, after one full year Dana Leong brings to a close his “Rhapsody in Groove” hosted by New York’s famed listening room The Jazz Gallery. Throughout the series, Dana presented a concert featuring new creative music and rare combinations of groups from the New York music scene's most talented artists. Dana will be back on the town with a brand new project in some of your favorite NYC venues in the spring after touring the month of March with the Grammy-nominated “Absolute Quintet” led by drum maestro Dafnis Prieto. For more information on Dana Leong, please log on to www.danaleong.com No Luck Club - This Vancouver-based instrumental hip hop band spent the first part of 2006 recording its sophomore album, Prosperity. A fusion of turntable improvisation and studio trickery, Prosperity is a self-described "genre-smashing sonic collage" comprised of four musical suites. The trio self-released the album in Canada to wide acclaim from both mainstream and independent media. The positive buzz led to their current licensing deal with an upstart, New York indie label called Expansion Team. Prosperity will be available domestically in the United States on May 8, 2007 and NLC will be playing a few shows in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco (hopefully!) to promote the release. The group will be sliding through to NYC and they promised us that they will be dropping by the ImaginAsian Radio studios for an interview next week. Please your ears open and tuned into www.imaginasianradio.com for the interview. For more information, please visit www.noluckclub.com or www.expansionteam.org Just In
